Testing myths about Blended Learning - You be the judge!

Recently a workshop examining myths about blended learning was held as part of the 3C Project. The format for the workshop was based on the Discovery Channel show Myth Busters, where each episode the hosts Jamie and Adam examine common myths and use science to show whether the myths are true or not.

The Myths
For our workshop we looked at four myths about eLearning and blended learning, which were based on comments we have heard from staff around PolyU. The four myths tested by workshop participants were:
  1. Face-to-face teaching is the most effective approach and our students like it, so there is no need to do anything else.
  2. The costs associated with eLearning outweigh the benefits.
  3. If I ignore it long enough, blended learning and eLearning will eventually go away.
  4. If I put my lecture notes online, students will stop coming to my lectures.
How the myths were tested
After discussing what we mean by a myth and defining blended learning, participants used online resources, videos of student interviews and information drawn from their own experience to evaluate the accuracy of these statements. Participants voted before and after the discussion about the myths to see whether their views changed.

Were the myths true or not?
The verdict on these myths is that they were BUSTED - that's the term that the Myth Busters use when a myth can't be substantiated, or there is sufficient evidence to suggest that they are unlikely to be true.

What do you think?
